Dear Mr. Loughheed,
The single vehicle crash, which caused the death of our daughter Melissa Melan and her
friend Levi Dorn, was a tragedy beyond words. I would do anything to change the events of that day but that is not something
in my power. I think it is in our power to spare other parents from similar agony.
The individual who is responsible for the deaths of two such wonderful young people is
still driving, under a graduated license. I find this idea is scandalous. Whether his responsibility for this tragedy is a
result of inexperience or wanton disregard for himself, his friends and the other people using the road he should not be in
possession of a graduated driver’s license.
The Saferoads.com website implies that Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation reserves
the right to "quickly identify problem driving behaviors that could be corrected…" As it stands now, if police can show
that a driver with a GDL has any alcohol in his system his license can be suspended immediately. The GDL license can
also be suspended for 8 or more demerit points which on average is any three moving violations i.e. Failing to signal a lane
change. I think killing two people indicates a problem driving behavior. It should not be too difficult to identify the problem
drivers; they are facing criminal charges related to their driving. Where is Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation now?
