What Happened?

At approximately 5:15 p.m., Thursday September 7, 2006 our daughter Melissa was killed in a car crash on Hwy. 21 between Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan. Her friend Levi Dorn, also a passenger in the car, died later that evening as a result of injuries he incurred.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with ‘two counts of dangerous driving causing death’. He has entered a plea of ‘Not Guilty’. Trial dates have been set for October 11 and 12, 2007 in Sherwood Park Alberta.

The charges read as a statement of fact to me. They reflect accurately the circumstances of their deaths. This was a single vehicle crash, a direct result of excessive speed and blatant disregard for the safety of his two passengers and everyone else on the road.

On September 27, 2006 my husband Landon, Melissa’s Dad, gave the following speech at Vimy Ridge Academy during an assembly to honor Melissa.

Yesterday was my first day back to work following Melissa’s death.

It has been a very difficult time for me.

Although my coworkers have been supportive and sympathetic almost every one has a story about a brother or sister, son or daughter, niece or nephew who has been killed or seriously injured in a car accident.

Part of my job is to help people to prevent accidents and the first thing we teach them is that accidents almost never happen.

The definition of an accident is; "An event that happens without any planning, apparent cause, or deliberate intent".

If you think about that for a moment you will realize that most car accidents are not accidents at all.

If you are driving too fast – that is not an accident.

If you change lanes without signaling or checking if it is safe – that is not an accident.

If you are texting someone on your cell phone and run a red light – that is not an accident.

If you choose to drive while you are impaired – that is not an accident.

In each case, someone who had control of the situation made a bad decision.

You are coming into the time of your lives when you have more freedom.

Freedom however comes at a price.

The price is the responsibility of making decisions that affect yourself, your friends and your family.

Please think about that responsibility. Remember Melissa,

Thanks for listening.

Landon Melan

This was not an accident.

What about Justice?

Justice: (dictionary.com) . . . the quality of being just, . . . the moral principal determining just conduct, . . . to administer justice in a community.

Might we start there?

Vengeance: (dictionary.com) . . . infliction of injury, harm, humiliation, or the like, on a person by another who has been harmed by that person; violent revenge, . . . the desire for revenge.

Justice and Vengeance are not the same thing.

That there is Justice in Society is our right and our duty.

Vengeance is for conscience, karma and God.

These changes will not affect anyone who drives safely and conscientiously; only those whose actions warrant the suspension

As a member of the public I have to trust that at the very least the laws made should reflect society’s social and moral standards; and that Justice will be served in enforcing these same laws. In many recent instances it is my opinion that justice has not been served.

What am I to prepare myself for? Melissa was ripped away from us, denied another precious moment followed by another. She was killed at the hands of another. It was not an accident; it was the result of the driver’s choices. Melissa is gone. Levi is gone. Shane is gone. Josh is gone. At the heart of it, they are all gone for the same basic reasons; absence of basic humanity for each other, absence of conscience and consequence, selfish thrill seeking insanity.

We need to find a way – a new way to become something better; to see the potential in ourselves and each other, and to hold that in high regard. We need to find a new way to proceed into our lives with vision and purpose; to Live True.
