June 20, 2007

Hello everyone. As you have seen on the website, we had a meeting on June 14, 2007 with Hounorable Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Landon and I left this meeting feeling very positive and encouraged by our efforts with this petition. The government is listening. They were very aware of what we are doing, and very up to date on the progress of this petition.

Thank you to all of you who are part of this. Together we will make a difference.

What did we learn? First and foremost – that it is extremely important to continue. Our government acknowledges that they do, and will respond to public input. It is imperative that we continue to spread the petition throughout Alberta, and also imperative that those of you who can take the time – to call your M.L.A., and let them know how you feel about the issue. Excessive speed is as dangerous as alcohol. Those who take the lives of others under the influence of speed are as dangerous to society as those who take the lives of others under the influence of alcohol. Our G.D.L. program is about making sure that new drivers KNOW this, and drive with respect. Our roadways carry our loved ones, all of us are vulnerable, and making these changes will have an affect.

Please continue spreading the petition throughout Alberta, talk about it, email it to your friends and family, and keep the momentum going.

In memory of Melissa and Levi, lets keep this moving.

Thank you for everything,

Moneca

Hello Everyone

The petitions continue to be presented in Legislative Assembly; to date I have turned over approximately 900 signatures. I am very thankful to everyone for their support.

We still have a long way to go however. The goal for signatures is 20,000, which seems like a lot I know, but if everyone who has downloaded the petition from the website collected 20 signatures, and returned them to me, we will have reached our goal! So PLEASE keep going, we will make changes!

There are a few things to keep in mind.

WE WANT ALL THE SIGNATURES TO COUNT, this is very important!

When collecting signatures, PLEASE use the downloadable form from the website.

This form contains all the necessary information required for acceptance in Legislative Assembly.

Signatures on a form that is missing any of the information or wording from the original may be excluded upon submission.

Signatures on the reverse side will be excluded upon submission.

To increase the impact of the Petition, please consider calling your local MLA and let them know you support it. This will go a long way in motivating the provincial government to listen and take action.

Melissa’s story is having an impact. Recently the AMA has adopted her story, and the related media coverage as part of their new Driver’s Training Program. For more details on this important development, please see the article from the Sherwood Park News,

April 26, 2007

Hello everyone. Good news! I turned over the first batch of signed petitions today – approximately 400 signatures. Thank you to everyone who has signed and is out there collecting signatures! The support so far has been very positive, and I have conveyed that to Mr. Lougheed.

Mr. Lougheed will begin the tabling process in Legislative Assembly on May 1, 2007 – time permitting. I am very pleased and excited that this will be the second time that the petition has been discussed in Assembly.

At this point the best way to get the message across is for anyone out there who supports the petition to call or email your own MLA. This would let the member know that there is support within their own constituency. This is very important. They won’t know there is local support unless you let them know.

If you have been collecting signatures, or can do so, ask your own MLA to present (table) the petition in Legislative Assembly. Please let me know if you are doing this, as it can be co-coordinated through our MLA, Mr. Rob Lougheed.

Thank you so very, very much for your continued efforts. Please continue to collect signatures, let people know about this effort throughout the Province, and keep in touch!

Many thanks to all those who have signed the petition, and are out there collecting signatures for us. We are more grateful than words can express. As of today, over 900 petitions have been downloaded, and that is truly wonderful. Please continue to spread the word about the petition, as we need to get people from around the Province aware and involved. If anyone would like to host a petition in a public location, please contact me.

There are signs of progress. The subject of this petition did come up in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, April 10, 2007. The following is an excerpt from the Hansford transcripts.

Mrs. Jablonski: Thank you. Mr. Speaker, I understand that a
mother from Fort Saskatchewan is calling on the government to immediately suspend the licence of any young driver who is involved in a serious injury collision. Will the minister consider making this change?

Mr. Ouellette: As I indicated, Mr. Speaker, we’re reviewing the program and are committed to making whatever changes are reasonable and appropriate. I’m not aware of any jurisdiction in North America that immediately suspends the licence of a graduated driver that’s been charged with a serious collision. The registrar of motor vehicles can refer any driver at any time to the Alberta Transportation Safety Board for review of their driving privileges, and the transportation board can suspend, if need be, at any time.

The error about me being from Fort Saskatchewan aside, I thank Mrs. Jablonski for her question. We can do a lot to keep this issue in front of our Provincial government. Call your local MLA’s and voice your opinion; the more vocal we can be, the greater the impact.

Please remember to mail back your signed Petitions, as I will be able to present them into the Legislative Assembly in blocks.

Sincerely,

Moneca Melan
